Holy Mother, Blessed Are You Among Women
“What you don’t understand, Juanita hija, is that some things are set in stone. There are agreements. And once those compromisos are agreed upon, there’s no changing them. No changing minds, no changing the timeline, no changing husbands.”
“¿Me entiendes?”
This was how Juana Maria’s father reacted to her protests when Agapito announced he had found her a suitable match and Juana’s wedding date had been set for the first week of August after she graduated from high school.
The family had split in half several years before Agapito’s announcement. Juana Maria’s mother, Ana Maria, and Agapito had made the long journey from San Luis Potosi, Mexico, to Davenport, Iowa, with their youngest handful of children. The older siblings had already married and had families of their own there in Mexico. They were rooted and stayed behind. Once the family split, there was no putting it back together.
But Agapito didn’t know that yet. He still had hope that he could somehow weave the two threads again into one. Juana was the center of that family tapestry that her father designed over and over in his mind. Agapito saw his youngest daughter as the missing piece to his dream of a once-again united family. She was the bridge between Mexico and the USA, and her marriage would draw them all back together.
Agapito had spoken to his good friend and business partner back in San Luis Potosi.
