Lupita at Bonampak
By Emily Lupita
Bonampak, Chiapas, Mexico, 2010
About the Painting:
I traveled to Bonampak as a co-leader with a group of students after their intensive language program in San Cristobal, Chiapas, Mexico. We first visited Palenque, then ventured further into the jungle to see the famous Mayan murals inside the pyramid at Bonampak.
You can see some great photos of the frescos and also the surrounding area in this article in Yucatán Magazine. A quote from the article: More than perhaps any other example of Mayan art, the frescoes of Bonampak have shaped the way contemporary people imagine the classical Maya. Specialists have even gone as far as referring to the frescoes at the “Sistine Chapel of Mesoamerica” — and with good reason.
This was a journey I’d dreamt about since I was a teenager and read about the exquisite murals in National Geographic Magazine. Bonampak is located in a very secluded area of the Lacandon Jungle. It’s difficult to describe the pure beauty of the location - full of incredible giant trees covered in climbing vines. The murals are inside a three room structure, with frescos completely covering the inside of all three rooms. There’s a sense of mystery and awe. The brilliant turquoise paint still shines brightly, as if just completed, the artist still standing somewhere nearby.
Good journey,
