Autism Brothers Books 💙: All Dots All Day Until It's Done
The final step in making my Autism Brothers Books dream come true
🎨 Welcome
I want to say thank you…to you, gentle readers, for your encouragement during this final push toward making my Autism Brothers Books dream come true.
When my son, Charlie, had his one-year check-up at the pediatrician in Atlanta, the doctor explained to me that Charlie was not developing ‘normally’ and would need to see a specialist. This was the beginning of our Autism journey.
It was a difficult infant-hood and toddler-hood for my dear Charlie. He had breathing issues and eating issues and he didn’t start speaking. He didn’t make eye contact or respond to his name. He woke up, sometimes 10+ times a night, screaming.
It was a time of constant hyper-vigilance and sleep deprivation, as you can imagine. Charlie’s father was working long hours to support us and I was alone most of the time. It was up to me to protect and care for Charlie in those distressing moments when he would have a nervous system melt down and nothing seemed to comfort him.
Plus, I was determined to educate and potty train him, and teach him to read, write, and speak when the specialists cautioned me that those things most likely could not be done.
Why am I sharing this in a post about my new book series?
Because that’s how my introduction to Autism began. I didn’t know how to navigate the challenges that kept coming. There were times when Charlie had to wear a medical helmet…when he was in speech, behavioral, and feeding therapy all at once…there was a time when he refused to walk and I had to carry him - literally kicking and screaming - everywhere we went…while I was pregnant. Then, soon, I was carrying baby Archie under one arm and (screaming & kicking) toddler Charlie under the other arm.
Now, nine years later, my beloved Charlie Ozan - and his little brother, my sweet Archie Zafer, are blossoming. They are both thriving and enjoying a fun, beautiful childhood surrounded by a team of people working to give them their best lives. There are still challenges, but for all the beautiful blooming that has taken place, I am extraordinarily grateful.
In turn, I am also beginning to blossom. Being able to create this story about my two Autistic sons enjoying a day of travel & adventure together - it’s been joyful and healing in so many ways. I dreamed up this book at a time in my life when I thought I would never again have this type of creative energy. So much has changed. Thank you for being on this journey with me.
However your creativity gives you joy and heals you in those special ways that only creativity can…I’m sending love to you. Keep going. 🌿
Good journey,
🦋 Videos of the Pages - Full of Dots
Here are a few videos I made and put up on my social media.
My motto was, “All dots, all day, until it’s done.”
It was fun for me - making these videos as I completed the dots on each page. Like a mini celebration, each one.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
