Emily Lupita Explores: Lyrical Lupitas 2024
A New Portrait Series Created While Listening to My Favorite Songs
🎨 Welcome
How do we handle the (frequent) solitude that comes with creativity? I’m feeling so excited about my newest Lupita portrait series. But I’m excited by myself - in my art studio - alone - celebrating the new series that I sketched out and have been working on - alone - for the past several months. I’m dancing by myself, which can be fun. But really…nothing even close to slow dancing with that one special person or singing the lyrics to your favorite songs at a concert with a group of friends.
Often times, creativity comes with solitude.
And I love a good early morning alone in my art studio. Yes. But the best part of my artwork journey is when I get to share my portraits with others. It never ceases to be a bit terrifying for me to release new work into the world. Still…here goes…thank you for receiving it on the other side of this newsletter.
However your creativity arrives, in solitude or with your special person, or in a group, I’m sending love to you. Keep going. 🌿
Good journey,
🦋 Lyrical Lupita 2024
My new portrait series is called “Lyrical Lupita 2024.” I have a sketchbook with ideas from the past few years based on lyrics from my favorite songs. This portrait is titled, “Hold My Earrings For My Debut,” which is from “Little Girl Gone” by Chinchilla. The first time I heard this song was fairly recently and I knew immediately that it would stay with me.
And the first time I heard these lyrics about the earrings, I knew there was a painting there. I could see myself removing my big earrings to ready myself for battle. Although I’ve not been in physical battle (thank God), I have been moved to call up my warrior spirit lately.
The “sound on” in the graphic below refers to my posts on Instagram - which have the cool feature of including the featured song along with my portraits. So you can listen while you look.
“Every Rose Has Its Thorn” features Lupita stopping to smell the roses, only to be pierced in the heart by a thorn. Such a great song…especially that devastating sigh at the very beginning. Music by Poison, a band (and song) from my early school days.
My “Shot Through the Heart” portrait takes the lyrics literally. That’s how it feels..so many arrows. These lyrics are, of course, from the ultimate song to scream out with our friends, “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi.
These are the initial first draft sketches. I hope to have a series of 20 full-color portraits coming soon. ❤️🔥

Emily, I love these! So often song lyrics and music express exactly what we are feeling, but we don't know how to explain it. You have found a beautiful way to express how they feel for you. Thank you for sharing these personal portraits with us. So lovely!
