Juana Maria Gutiérrez-Plum
By Emily Lupita
About:
This painting is called Juana Goddess of the Garden. I decided to start my Lupita Portraits section with this portrait I made in honor of my mother, Juana Maria Gutiérrez-Plum. I’m inspired by her and wanted to do something that shows her how much she means to me. Mom had a stroke with a catastrophic brain bleed in 2019 and remains paralyzed on one side of her body. She lives in a rehab facility and requires 24 hour nursing care. I wish I could heal her. I miss her. I feel closer to her when I’m painting. 💗
Before her stroke, my mom was an accomplished award-winning artist and master gardener who brought so much joy and light into the world through her talents. But after the stroke she lost her ability to paint. It was like her muscle memory and artistic knowledge she’d accumulated over a lifetime just vanished. But she didn’t give up.
Over the past three years she’s been re-learning to paint. She’s drawing birds and butterflies. Her new paintings are incredible. Raw and emotional. So hard won. I love her and I hope she loves her portrait.
Good journey,
❤️🔥Emily Lupita
