Autism Brothers Books 💙: The Dark Church
A Sacred Space Drawn in Color
🎨 Welcome
How do we encourage ourselves to keep going when we’re in the middle of a giant creative project? One way is to celebrate the milestones and successes along the way.
With that sentiment in mind, this week I wanted to share that I’ve finished the page in my new Cappadocia book showing the inside of The Dark Church. Yay!! I am dancing a little in my art studio to celebrate. This is the most complex illustration I’ve ever made. I’m excited to see it in finished form after so many hours of work. I loved creating this page - it was joyful and meditative to draw each curve of every robe.
However you encourage yourself to keep moving forward with your creative project, I am sending love to you. I hope you will keep going toward your creative dreams.
Good journey,

🌸 The Dark Church - Cappadocia Book
The Dark Church is one of my favorite places and to have shared it - in real life - with my sons was a true gift. You will notice that in my illustration, the Brothers take off their hats as a sign of respect. It’s a sacred space - we could all feel it then - and I wanted to express that in the final painting as well.
The Dark Church dates from the mid 11th century and was originally a monastic church. Known in Turkish as Karanlık Kilise, it is famous as Cappaodica’s most beautifully preserved Byzantine artwork and is located inside the Göreme Open Air Museum. Read more here.
